A few changes will be made in a couple of athletic and administrative positions within Coventry Local Schools next fall.

The Coventry board of education voted Tuesday night to make Neal Kopp, who is currently the  dean of students at the junior high and the head football coach, to become a new assistant principal and the new athletic director for the 2010-2011 school year.

Jim Vivo, currently the athletic director at Coventry High School, will be stepping down and going to Youngstown Chaney to become the head football coach there.

“I had a goal to move into administration at this point in my career,” Kopp said. “On one hand I’m very fortunate to have it come along as quickly as it did. I’m equally excited Jerami (Hodgkinson) can step in and take over.”

Hodgkinson, who was an assistant coach for football last season, will take over the job of head coach. He plans to keep the majority of the staff and fill in the spots vacated by Kopp leaving and him sliding into the head position.

“I’m extremely excited,” Hodgkinson said. “My family and I grew up on the football field with my dad. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and to have him on my staff is something special.”

Jerami’s father Bruce was  running back, linebacker and special teams assistant coach last season. Jerami was head special teams coach and helped with the offensive and defensive lines.

Kopp was confident that Jerami was ready for the job.

“The foundation of hard work and toughness we tried to instill last season will continue to grow,” Kopp said. “I’m excited for him. I went through that in 2003, which it meant to coach with my father (John)... that holds a special place in my heart.”

The goal of keeping a family atmosphere will continue said Kopp, and said the team responded well to that last season.
