The Springfield Township Trustees approved construction of a gazebo to be built on the lake across from the senior center. At the April 17 meeting at the Town Hall it was decided that Americraft of Hartville would construct the 30-foot diameter structure. It will be used for weddings, concerts, community functions, church services, etc. It should be ready for use during the Springfield Lakemore Community Days but will not be dedicated until Aug. 2 during the township’s bicentennial celebration. The trustees voted to name the new structure the Bicentennial Gazebo. A plaque will be placed on it.
Trustees also discussed a Waterloo Road sewer extension. This would be in the JEDD area. The section of Waterloo has city water but not sewer. There’s no cost to the township.
The board is also looking into extending the parking area on the lakefront across from the fire station. Road Superintendent Richard Kaylor will obtain information on the cost.
Kaylor reported that the department has been patching township roads. He asked residents keep in mind there are three departments working in the area, including Springfield, Summit County and the state. Township roads are those that are not striped, with the exception of two. Kaylor said if residents want to report potholes or problems with any road he will be happy to take the calls and pass the information on to the appropriate department. He also reported that Alexander Field in Sawyerwood was graded and seeded.
Zoning Administrator Nick Campanelli reported several properties will be abated - a process if not paid for by the resident is placed on the tax duplicate as a lien upon the land. Fiscal Officer Bruce Killian reported that the township does receive reimbursements for those properties from the Summit County auditor.
The resignation of Zoning Secretary Kim McTague was accepted. The trustees stated she would be missed and that she has done a good job for the department and they wish her well.
Fire Chief Vic Wincik reported that the Smoke Detector Initiative is beginning and in June the department will announce its new initiative. The department is expecting a new ambulance to arrive in June and is beginning the process to order another. They are also looking at replacing two 1983 vehicles with one new apparatus. The department has applied for a grant from FEMA. The resignation of part time firefighter Tony Rowe was accepted. The GPD Group will have its report on fire station No. 2 to Wincik on April 18. That will include the information as to the costs and feasibility of repairing the station or building a new station.
The police department for the township is in the process of adding a Voluntary Auxiliary. This will consist of volunteers from the community that would assist the officers during times like community days or with traffic control at an accident, etc.
“I think it will be a great benefit and will get people involved,” stated Smith. There will be applications available if you are interested in being a part of the Auxiliary, training and uniforms are provided.
The resignation of Ginger Gray was accepted along with that of Gwendolyn Stafford who has accepted a full time position with Lakemore. The department has placed an order for two new black and white cruisers.
