Manchester was hoping to close 2012 with a bang but was dealt a heartbreaking 54-53 defeat to Northwestern in overtime at the K.Jackson Greynolds Memorial Classic at Barberton High School on Dec. 30.

Malachi Nolletti’s short jumper at the buzzer lifted the Huskies to the victory. The Panthers tied the contest in OT on a pair of Jamar Dukes free throws with :32 remaining and moved ahead 53-52 when Bryan Daily hit the front end of a two-shot foul with :07 left, setting the stage for the frantic finish.

The loss ended the Panthers’ six-game winning streak as they slipped to 7-2 overall.

Manchester, who will return to action on Tuesday at Waynedale, never seemed to get in the flow of the game, trailing the entire opening half.

Following the intermission, the Panthers put together a nice run and outscored Northwestern 18-9 to take a four-point advantage into the finale.

“We just didn’t get into any rhythm the whole game,” head coach Gene Schindewolf said. “We made a lot of mistakes with turnovers, missed free throws and giving them a lot of second chances on the offensive end ... We had the opportunities, but didn’t take advantage of them.”

Dukes had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Bryan Daily added 13 points and had eight assists, while Nick Peyakov finished with 11 points and eight boards.

Manchester shot just 35 percent from the field in the contest (19 of 54) and 48 percent from the line (12 of 25). They also committed 14 costly turnovers.

LADY PANTHERS

The Lady Panthers reached the midway point of their season last week and notched a pair of wins on the road.

Manchester routed Akron Buchtel 81-37 on Dec. 27 and downed East Cleveland Shaw 67-46 at the North Canton Lady Vikings Classic on Dec. 29.

The two victories improved the Panthers’ record to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in league play. They are tied for top honors in the PAC-7 with Indian Valley (9-1, 5-1) and Triway (8-2, 5-1).

Manchester won for the seventh time in their last eight games with their 67-46 win over Shaw.

The Panthers trailed 15-13 after eight minutes of action but outscored the Cardinals 20-4 in the second quarter.

Kayci Krzynowek led with 18 points. Junior Karley Dougherty had 17 and sophomore Alex Klein had 16. The three combined for 51 of the team’s 67 points.

Klein led the team with nine rebounds and eight assists, while Krzynowek had six assists and three steals. Dougherty finished with eight boards and six assists.

“We started out a little slow, but came on strong in the second quarter,” said head coach Tucker Pappas. “We got good contributions from all five of our starters and the entire  bench. It was a good game for us to get ready for Struthers (Jan. 2), who is 10-1 and a top-notch Division II program.”

The ladies return to the hardwood on Jan. 9 as they visit Tuslaw.
