It’s a business about growth – in plants and personal life. Kern’s Greenhouse and Florist, 2438 Canton Rd. in Springfield Township, has grown luscious plants and delivered floral arrangements for more than 30 years. Last year, the family-operated business branched out and opened Kern’s Christian Books and Supplies.
“Cornerstone closed in October and Nov. 1 we opened because of all their customers,” said Heidi Kern-Flack. “Cornerstone helped us a lot.”
Offering books on personal and spiritual growth, Kern’s Christian Books and Supplies is located inside the florist shop. They carry a wide selection of gift items, greeting cards, home decorative items, Bibles and study guides and devotionals.
On June 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kern’s Christian Books and Supplies will host their first book signing with six local authors. Like the selection at both the greenhouse and bookstore, there’s a wide variety.
“These authors are local,” said Heidi. “Their topics vary from children’s books, to fiction, non-fictional, motivational and counseling.”
The authors attending the first book signing include Debra Johanyak, Karen DeLuca, Becca Lee, John Durkin, Linda Lonsdorf and Nora White.
Johanyak will autograph her book, “Behind the Veil,” a memoir of her life in Iran during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. She was the only woman with dual citizenship in both Iran and the United States living in Iran when the American Embassy in Tehran was taken over by militants. In her book, Johanyak talks about her exploration of faith, celebrating Christmas in Iran and the fear that eventually set in. She was raised in Akron and taught in Shiraz, Iran. She is currently a professor at the University of Akron, as well as a screenwriter.
DeLuca will sign her book, “Living Your Life in Gratitude.” She shares 52 tips that will impact our lives and help us get more of what we want out of life. She wrote this book to encourage people to reach their maximum potential. She has a bachelor’s in marketing from Kent State and an MBA in E-commerce from the University of Phoenix. She built a successful career in sales in the consumer packaged goods industry. She and her sister currently operate a skin care company.
Becca Lee, of Uniontown, has five children and six grandchildren. So it is no wonder this preacher’s kid grew up and wrote a delightful children’s book called “Skilda the Skunk.” Skilda learns she is different but also learns God created each of us with unique abilities to protect them. Lee will sign her book June 25.

John Durkin is a Jackson High School teacher who lives in Hartville and used to teach at Coventry. Drawing upon his more than 30 years in education, he wrote the book “Lessons from Ty,” about a special needs boy. He deftly describes how strangers react to Ty and how others reach out to him.
Nora White, author of “Armed with God’s Power,” explores tragedy beyond our control and getting beyond pain. She shares her true story about overcoming circumstances of abuse and addiction, disease and death. A trained counselor with Tomorrow’s Light Ministries for Women, White is an advertising and marketing specialist with one of the top communication companies in the world.
Linda Lonsdorf, of Green, is the author of “Family Threat,” a spellbinding thriller set here in Green and Akron. Her book is about greed, revenge and guilt. This is her first whodunit with riveting plot twists. She encourages guests to attend the book signing.
