The answer was blowing in the wind at Canton Country Day School as more than 215 pinwheels were planted for peace.
This was the third celebration as Canton Country Day School participation in International
Pinwheels For Peace.
“Peace impacts us three ways,” State Representative Scott Oelslager told the students. He said we must have peace with our own lives. Secondly, students must have peace with one another and to react appropriately to each other. Lastly, he said, “We need peace in our world. We have conflicts. You're the next generation that could make peace happen.”
Fifth grade students Jon Lehrer, Cameron Timken and Sam Jocas said peace is no fighting, no uproar and understanding. Middle school students added that peace is respecting our differences and putting others before yourself.
The children sang “Let There Be Peace on Earth" and "Peace Like A River" before heading out to the school's front yard to display their hand-crafted pinwheels.
Canton Country Day School serves children ages 3 years old in a pre-pre-kindergarten class up to eighth grade. The older students serve as “buddies” or mentors to the younger students. So the students paired up with their buddies to help place the pinwheels on dowel rods driven into the front lawn.
John Lothrop, the first teacher ever hired at Canton Country Day School in 1964, planted his pinwheel. “I love to work with the children, especially the middle school kids.”
“This is a nice ceremony,” said Denise Hunt, the development coordinator. “The pinwheel just
so happens to be our logo. It's a nice fit.”
Canton Country Day School is located at 3000 Demington Ave. NW.
