The Manchester girls will enter the postseason riding a 14-game winning streak as they get set to battle Alliance in the first round of the Lake Division II Sectional basketball tournament on Wednesday at Lake High School.

The Aviators, who are members of the Northeastern Buckeye Conference, have compiled a 1-19 record through Tuesday night’s action. Their lone victory came against Youngstown Liberty 59-58 on Dec. 3. Since then, they have dropped 16 consecutive games.

The Lady Panthers (19-3, 13-1) earned the second seed at the tournament drawings.

If Manchester wins its opener, they will meet the winner of the Canton South/Akron Springfield game on Feb. 23.

“I really like our draw, but I didn’t want to see Triway again (in our bracket),” said head coach Tucker Pappas. “They really scare me with their size. For us to advance, we are going to have to have a couple days of good practice, and really get after it defensively. We are on a nice win streak and are progressing, but we need to speed up the process.”

The Panthers closed out their regular season recently with a pair of road wins.

Manchester defeated Canton Timken 59-47 in overtime on Feb. 6 and Marlington 59-50 on Feb. 9.

In the team’s win over the Trojans, junior standout Kayci Krzynowek’s single-handedly willed her team to a victory.

Krzynowek, a 5-foot-4 guard, tallied a career-high 30 points, nailing eight of 12 field goal tries and seven of 11 free throws. Of her 30 points, six came in the extra session, when the Panthers outscored the Trojans 12-0.

Krzynowek also had 12 assists, six rebounds, and five steals in the game.

“We survived against a pesky Timken team that would not quit,” Pappas said. “We struggled as a team, but found a way to win.”

Sophomore Alex Klein had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Three days later, the Lady Panthers wrapped up their campagin with a 59-50 win over Marlington.

Manchester overcame a 30-27 halftime deficit to gain the win.

Junior Karley Dougherty paced the red and black with 17 markers, seven rebounds and five assists

Krzynowek had 14 points, seven assists and five steals, while Klein finished with 12 points and nine boards and Emma Kreakbaum chipped in 12 points.

“We finished 19-3 and are happy about that, but realize we have to be more consistent and put teams away earlier or we are going to get burned,” Pappas said. “We are a work in progress and are winning, so its hard to complain with the results.”
