Wise Road just west of Mayfair Road closed Jan. 23 after a plow driver noticed a pavement deficiency. The pavement is dipping and the berm has sunk due to an abandoned mine under the roadway. Summit Testing found a three-foot wide coal mine 16 to 19 feet deep.
The company has drilled shafts down to the void so an engineer can identify the limits of the collapse. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Mineral Resources Management Abandon Mine Land Program provides emergency response to hazards that occur suddenly and present an immediate threat to the public health, safety or general welfare. ODNR will work with their contractor to drill holes in the affected area and pump grout into the voids created by the mine.
“ODNR estimates mobilization of the drill rig and grout crew in a week at the earliest,” said Paul Oberdorfer, assistant service director for the city of Green.
After the holes are filled with grout, the road will be cut open at the location and new base material and pavement will be installed to eliminate the dip.
Depending upon the scope of the project, the road may be closed for another month. Detours include using Greensburg Road to Boston Avenue NW to reconnect with Wise Road or using Graybill Road.
