John “Skip” Summerville has announced his candidacy as councilperson representing Green City Council Ward 4.

“The question I get asked the most is ‘Why are you running for office?’” I have been fortunate to have had a full and successful business career,” said Summerville. “My mother used to say ‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ I want to take the same business talents that led me to some of the highest positions in my industry to serve my Green neighbors.”

Summerville observed, currently, the city council has two attorneys representing its citizens – 30 percent of the entire council body. “I understand the importance of having attorneys on council,” he said. “But there are differences on how attorneys and business students are trained.  Attorneys are trained to argue for their beliefs, and win at all costs.”

In business it is important to understand all sides of an issue and to reach an agreement between disagreeing views. “That is what I have done my entire life,” said Summerville.

“I have negotiated hundreds of business transactions. The company I currently own with my son does business daily in all 48 contiguous states, as well as with many foreign countries with diverse cultures,” he said.

“I know a fresh, conservative business perspective can be essential for the controlled growth my neighbors so often talk about,” said Summerville.

“I love living in the city of Green, and want to be part of the group that represents the needs of its citizens,” said Summerville. “I want to help make the City of Green a safe, productive, fiscally responsible community for my neighbors to live and work in. I am grateful at the opportunity to serve."
