The Akron Zoo will unveil its newest expansion, a Conservation Carousel, July 31. The carousel will feature 33 wood hand-carved animals and a peacock chariot that kids and adults will be able to ride.
The construction on the pavilion and adjacent picnic area is just about completed. The carousel itself is being built by Carousel Works in Mansfield, Ohio and is on schedule to be completed by the deadline. Fourteen figures, plus the chariot, are completed. Another seven are currently being painted and six are in the carving process. The last five will begin to be carved in early July. Carousel Works started installing the framework and facade. The animals are due to be installed the week of July 12.
Some of the animals on the carousel will be ones that reside at the Akron Zoo like a penguin, Komodo dragon and a tiger. There will also be many animals that guest will be able to ride that are not currently found at the zoo like an elephant, polar bear and giraffe. The carousel ride will be $2 and will last about 2-minutes. There will also be graphics at the ride so riders can see where the animal that they rode lives.
