The two main ingredients in the recipe for successful food sales are generous portions and affordable prices. The sisters and volunteers at the Sancta Clara Monastery in Canton add homemade and fresh ingredients to that recipe to guarantee that their customers come back again and again.
The Sancta Clara Monastery has been offering homemade soups and breads for sale as part of their fundraising efforts for almost a decade. The funds help support the nine sisters that live and work at the monastery. They are part of a sisterhood of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, one of several branches of the Order of St. Clara with origins dating back to France in 1854.
The monastery itself was donated by John and Ida O'Dea in 1945. The couple decided to offer their large Tudor home and 15 acres of land for use as “a religious house of Eucharistic Adoration” according to the website.
“We started the fundraiser in 2003 as a means to support ourselves,” said Mother Magdalen Colson, PCPA. “Bread has a spiritual dimension to it. The sisters, along with volunteers from the community, prepare the soups and breads fresh in the kitchen of the monastery.”
Mother Colson said that they receive a lot of repeat customers in the community and they always see many new people that come because they heard how good and affordable the food is. While each person has their own personal choices, there are a few favorites.
“We've been told by people from the Italian community that our wedding soup is as good as mom ever made. It is the best selling soup. And, our strawberry bread is a best seller,” Sister Colson said.
The soup and bread sale is held over three days four times year at the Sancta Clara Monastery. The fundraiser started by selling honey buns. Today, the foods are made fresh and without any preservatives. The standard list of soups includes wedding, chicken noodle, tomato, lentil and chili.
Organic chicken from Amish Country is used in the chicken noodle soup. Soups are sold by the quart or by the pint.
Breads include raisin walnut, parmesan, white and the infamous strawberry. They also sell bags of fresh baked bread sticks and New York style cheesecake.
“The bread kitchen was remodeled last year for the purpose of baking bread for the sales. Our monastery friends helped us do that through their generous donations,” Mother Colson said.
The Sancta Clara Monastery is located at 4200 Market Ave. N in Canton. For more information about the soup and bread sale and to find out when the next sale is scheduled, visit www.poorclares.org.
