On Aug. 17, a Lee Drive woman told police she put an ad in a local paper to sell kittens for $150 each. She said someone e-mailed her about the kittens, then sent her a check for $2,770.77. She was told to cash the check, take out her costs for the kittens, and send the remainder to a friend. Police determined the check was fraudulent.
A Hills and Dales Road man, 36, was charged with one count of domestic violence Aug. 13 after he became involved in an argument with this girlfriend in the front yard. He grabbed the left arm of his girlfriend and then grabbed her hair while trying to pull her into the apartment complex, causing or attempting to cause physical harm to her. He was placed under
arrest and transported to the Stark County Jail.
Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan announced today that Gary Mallicoat, 29, of Akron, was sentenced to 26-and-a-half years in prison on August 18, 2010, after pleading guilty on July 8, 2010 to 11 counts of Aggravated Arson, two counts of Burglary and four counts of Arson. Eighteen months of the sentence was for a Domestic Violence conviction.
Empty plates filled the room. There was no food. There were no people. The only item placed on each plate was a name and an age of when they had died. All of the individuals had passed away in Stark country from automobile accidents in the last 10 years. The Stark County Safe Communities and the OVI Task Force held what is called an Empty Plate Dinner, Over the Limit, Under Arrest Campaign on August 19, at Executive Catering in Perry Township.
An Edinburgh Drive woman, 26, was arrested for domestic violence Aug. 8 after she allegedly assaulted her father at their home. The incident began when the woman tried to grab something out of her father’s pocket. When he asked her to stop, she ignored him and a physical confrontation followed. The father was treated for minor scratches on his right arm. The woman was taken to the Summit County Jail to be booked.
The Jackson Township Police Department and the Stark County Coroner’s Office are investigating a traffic crash that occurred in the 4600 block of State Route 214 in Jackson Township.
The Jackson Township Police Department responded to the Magnuson Hotel, located at 4914 Everhard Rd. NW at 4:46 a.m. Aug. 23.
A Mac Book Pro, a Dell laptop, an cell phone and a GPS unit were stolen from a car parked in the 4200 block of Belden Village Mall Aug. 5. The vehicle was unlocked.
On Aug. 3, a Milnar Avenue man told deputies he confronted a white male at his door trying to break into his home. The suspect, he said, slammed the door on his hand several times, and then fled. The man was treated for an injury at the scene. He was unable to provide a detailed description of the suspect, the report said.
Actor-Director, Corbin Bernsen, 55, was thrown to the ground outside of the Upper Deck restaurant and bar on July 27. He had been in town filming the movie "25 Hill" which he wrote to help promote the Akron icon, the All American Soap Box Derby.
On Aug. 7, police observed a suspect laying in a ditch at Dressler Road and Everhard Road. The suspect was very intoxicated and had urinated on himself. The man, 50, of Elkhart, Indiana, was taken back to his hotel by his son. A citation was issued with a court date.
On Aug. 10, Summit County Sheriff's Detectives began investigating the critical injury to a 1.5-year-old infant girl from Green. The baby is currently in Akron Children's Hospital in critical condition.
The suspect, Thomas Rardon, age 33, of Uhler Street in Akron, portrays himself as a tree removal expert, “Tommy the Tree Guy” from Trees Are Us. He gives a written estimate, takes a down payment, then never returns to complete the work.
On July 27, officers were investigating an abandoned pickup truck at a Massillon Road gas station when a man came out and said his girlfriend left him and the vehicle there without the keys. When the man opened the driver’s door, officers observed drug paraphernalia in plain view in the side pocket. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 91 baggies of marijuana, two handguns, four ammunition magazines, a digital scale, various knives and several small containers with additional marijuana. The man, identified as a 32-year-old of North Canton, was booked in Summit County on charges of trafficking in drugs, carrying concealed weapons and obstructing official business.
Firefighters from New Franklin and Clinton were called at 9:02 p.m. today, Aug. 5 for a house fire at 6091 Kungle Road in New Franklin. The fire was reported by a neighbor who observed smoke issuing from the gable vent of the house. No one was home at the time of the fire.
On July 31, a 31-year-old Massillon man was stopped for a moving violation on Fulton Drive. After being identified, the man was found to be driving with a suspended license. Prior to towing the vehicle away, inventory was conducted and the arresting officer found a box with marijuana sitting on the passenger seat floor.
A Long Lake Blvd. man reported someone entered his unlocked vehicle during the overnight hours of July 17 and stole a laptop computer, a GPS device and other electronic equipment, total value $1,150.
On July 22 Jackson police responded to a call regarding a man with a gun in the 6200 block of Frank Road. Upon arrival, Jackson police located a vehicle parked in the 4000 lot of Mega Street that had a broken window that appeared to have been shot out. Responding officers continued to search the area. Witnesses said the defendant, 21, was seen wearing a white tank top and camouflage pants. Police located a man fitting the description and patted him down. The defendant was found to have a black Phantom pellet gun in his right cargo pants pocket. Witnesses said they saw him with the gun and the defendant admitted to shooting out the car window. A right front window was shot out of a black Cadillac. The defendant was charged with one count of possessing criminal tools and criminal mischief. He was booked into Stark County Jail.
A Raber Terrace woman told deputies she arrived home on July 11 and discovered property had been stolen from her apartment. She believed her ex-boyfriend was responsible. Shortly after, an officer stopped the 31-year-old suspect near his home in Canton after noticing a child’s bed hanging out of the back of his pickup truck. The man said the property was his. Deputies later determined the items found in the truck matched those reported stolen from the woman’s apartment. The man was arrested for receiving stolen property and taken to the Summit County Jail.
