Congratulations to Green resident Susan B. Allen, who has been selected by the Women’s History Project of the Akron Area to receive the 2009 Women of the Year Award – Pioneer. This year’s theme is:  Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet.

Susan is a LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional) and is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Cleveland Green Building Coalition. Having worked with TC Architects for over ten years, she designed the Akron Zoological Park’s new 35,000 square foot Education Center, Komodo Kingdom.  It was the first LEED Certified building in Summit County. The project was awarded an Excellence Award from the American Institute of Architects for the continued support of sustainable design initiatives and was featured in Properties Magazine.

She has presented at the Akron Zoological Park’s Green Day events since 2004 and the first Ohio Zoo Consortium Green Symposium in the fall of 2006.  She was a guest speaker at the Association of Zoological Horticulture and the Aquarium & Zoo Facilities Association’s Conference in 2008. 

She was recently a guest speaker for the Ohio Green Tour that visited Akron in October of 2008. For her commitment to sustainable design, she was awarded the 2008, Green Chamber of Commerce Impact Award for the Environment.  

Susan is a Kent State University Graduate having obtained two Bachelor’s Degrees in Science and in Architecture. She has lived in the City of Green for over 14 years and is the mother of two. She was appointed by Mayor Croghan and served on the City’s Charter Review Board Committee in 2005.

Susan is a board member of the Akron Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers. She participates in the judging of the Parade of Homes and the MAME Awards for the Home Builders Association for both Summit and Stark counties and currently serves as Vice President of the Summit County Board of Building Appeals. She is Chair Person for the American Institute of Architect’s student outreach program, “Architecture Is,” which brings awareness of our built environment to students throughout the region.
