Teamwork is the secret to success, according to Daniel Hosking, the owner of Salon 987.
“We all work as a team,” he said. “My goal is to have a staff of the most talented stylists and specialists who have a passion for working with our customers to make them look and feel their best when they leave the salon.”
Hosking believes a stylist must have a true passion for hair styling in order to be successful in this business. They have to be excited every day about their job and be willing to try new techniques and styles in order to stay current with the latest trends.
The spirit of teamwork is reflected in comments from stylist Allison Helmick who talked about why she likes working at Salon 987.
“I love how creative the staff is and how well we all work together,” said Renee Black, a nail tech. “I love working at the salon because we all work as a team.”
Hosking’s philosophy is simple. He said, “No one is better than anyone else here. I encourage my staff to ask for help when they run into a problem with coloring or styling. We each have our own special talents and when we share those talents, our customers gain the benefit of our combined expertise.”
Hosking made the decision years ago to hire employees rather than private contractors to work in his salon. This decision goes against the tide in today’s economy, when many salon owners feel it’s more cost effective to hire private contractors who rent chair space from them. But Hosking feels that having employees who are part of a team makes everyone accountable to the salon for their time and talents and in the end creates a better work environment. He feels blessed to have a wonderful staff who is dedicated and comes to work every day with a good attitude and works very hard to please their customers and make the business successful.
Sara Wills is Salon 987’s business manager. Her years of experience managing salons has given Hosking the opportunity to focus on growing the business. In order to keep track of the day-to-day operation, Wills uses Spa Salon Manager, a software program which tracks everything from client appointments to inventory, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and customer retention reports.
“Sara Willis has allowed me to be a hair dresser/owner which is my passion,” Hosking said. “When you are in business for yourself, many times you get burned out by the day-to-day operation of the business and you loose your passion. WIthout Sara I would be lost. I trust her business instincts and her attention to detail is the reason the salon runs so smoothly.”
Salon 987 is a full service salon, offering hair cuts, styling and coloring along with nails, facials, manicures and pedicures. They also provide men’s hair cuts and styling plus sports manicures and pedicures. Their Day Spa services include such luxuries as Side By Side European Pedicure Spa Chairs in a private room. Their Bridal Party Packages offer a full range of services for the bridal party plus the added touch of a continental breakfast.
An extensive line of Paul Mitchell products and equipment is used at Salon 987 due to their high quality for any type of hair and the on-going training that Paul Mitchell offers the staff on a regular basis so they can keep up with the latest products and techniques.
In February, Salon 987 will celebrate their two-year anniversary at their new location in the city of Green.
“Our business has continued to grow every month since we opened in Green. We want to thank all the people who became loyal customers and refer their friends to us,” Hosking recalls. “They have been with us from the beginning, when they we were in the midst of remodeling with wet paint on the walls and cabinets being built while did their hair.”
