When Kovatch Castings opened their doors in 1976, a multi-national company seemed like a lofty goal.

“My Father worked in investor casting and decided he wanted to go out on his own and give it a try,” Doug Kovatch, President of Kovatch Castings, said. “So he collateralized our home and the homes of two of his brothers and borrowed money from a friend. So we were very under capitalized.”

“But, with a lot of guts and determination, he started out with a small building on Home Avenue in Akron,” Kovatch said.

Since the office on Home Avenue, Kovatch Castings has moved their office into Green and their products all over the world.

“We ship to Puerto Rico, the Czech Republic, to Belgium and some of the components we're making are going into other parts of Europe as well,” Kovatch said.

“We're also trying to increase our influence in Western Europe and secure manufacturers' representation in the U.K. and in France,” he said.

Kovatch's products don't stop their travels in Europe, they also travel with U.S. troops.

“We're proud that we have many parts out there helping our troops and supporting them,” Kovatch said.

The success of this small, local company may have a lot to with the people who work at Kovatch Castings, but it also can be attributed to the product.

“We have focused on smaller, thin wall, fine surface finish investment castings that go all the airplanes, all over different military vehicles and gun parts that go to support our troops,” Kovatch said.

“The kind of alloys we pour are a wide range,” he said. “We focus on high stress, corrosion resistant alloys from stainless steel to carbon steels, nickel base, cobalt base, aluminum, brass, bronze. So we can pour the whole spectrum of alloys.”

Most of the products that Kovatch Castings make for their customers are made in their Canton location. With this recent boon in aerospace and military business, the company is expecting to do something many manufacturing companies have dreamed of -- expanding their office.

“We're actually expecting to expand the back of our building by 15,000 sq. ft. this year,” Kovatch said.

The ability to cast components that many in the casting market aren't experienced enough to do may be one of  the reasons why Kovatch Castings has stayed successful while other manufacturers are failing, but Kovatch attributed their success to something else.

“We've got great people with great attitudes who work hard,” Kovatch said. “My father started our company based on Christian principles and values and we hold and believe that our success is certainly related to our hard work, but also related to the good Lord watching out and providing for us,” he added.

As far what the company is in for next year, Kovatch says they are just trying to stay profitable, positive and prepare for better times to come.

“I consider this a preparation year for future growth,” Kovatch said. “I'm just absolutely
convinced that although 2010 is a little scary and uncertain that by 2011, 2012, 2013 there are going to be tremendous growth years, specifically in the aerospace industry, because it's very cyclical.”
