Mercy Medical Center personnel and local officials gathered to ceremonial break ground on what they call their field of dreams, a 55,000 square foot facility in the heart of Jackson Township.

Chili’s raising money for St. Jude this month

During the month of September, Chili's will be participating in its annual fundraiser for St. Jude Hospital. Chili's hopes to raise $50 million over the next five years for St. Jude. The Chili's in Belden Village has a goal of over $30,000 for St. Jude this year. They will be having a silent auction and raffle drawings at the restaurant. On Sept. 14, they will be holding their 5th annual Chili's/St. Jude Golf classic.

Dr. Kevin Lonsdorf is not retired

In last week's article, "Portage Lakes Career Center cuts ribbon on new wing," it was said that Dr. Kevin Lonsdorf os Suburban South Practice was retired. That is incorrect. He is still practicing, only his wife is retired from PLCC. We apologize for the mistake.

Fun walk set for Sept. 19

Walk & Roll, the first Subway Challenge Series "walking only" race will be held at the Walsh University track on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. The 3-mile course will use the track and the Stark Parks Hoover Park Connector Trail. There will also be an untimed "fun walk" of any length.

Summa Barberton Hospital will host free Stop Smoking classes. This series of classes is for people who want to quit smoking and need some support and motivation.

Making a difference in home health care and building trust with clients is what Wendy Palcheff, RN, BSN, hopes sets her new business apart from other home health care companies. Palcheff and her husband Andrew Palcheff, moved to Lake Township five years ago and opened their new business in Jackson Township in May of this year. To celebrate the opening, they held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 4 with the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce members, family and employees.

This is the fourth straight year that employment has been named as the most important problem and the numbers have steadily increased over those years. In 2007, the percentage of people that named employment issues as the most important problem was 20.8 perent. Other important issues, identified by survey respondents include, in order of importance, tax and money issues such as taxes are too high (18 percent) and crime and safety concerns such as too much crime (8.3 perent).

Akron Weekly Gas price update for Aug. 16

Average retail gasoline prices in Akron have fallen 9.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.75/g, according to gasoline price website AkronGasPrices.com.
