JACKSON TWP.  During its regular meeting on Oct.30, the Jackson Local Schools Board of Education approved purchasing five new buses and two new vans.

Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto said the buses each carry 72 passenger and will cost $421,575 total. The vans carry nine passengers will cost a total of $93,246. The older buses and vans will become alternates in the district’s fleet.

OTHER ACTIONS:

- Authorized participating in the Stark County Council of Government’s search for a natural gas contract. DiLoreto said the district’s contract runs through June 30, 2020. The new contract would run July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2025. This resolution was passed to allow the district to participate in the search along with 217 other districts. A second resolution will be needed to pass a contract.

- Heard a presentation from Sauder Elementary School Principal J.R. Reindel about physical space in each elementary school being reserved and setup as a maker spaces. All four elementary schools have implemented make spaces this year. A maker space is part of a room where students can go to, so they can design, create and share crafts and artworks. Reindel said the purpose is to give students time to be creative. The teachers at each school will determine when students can use the maker space. Reindel said that students will probably use the space two to four hours a month.

- Approved sending the five-year forecast to the Ohio Department of Education as required.

- Approved two field trips including 15 athletes from the softball team to travel in the spring to a tournament in Tennessee and for 20 to 40 Jackson Academy for Global Studies (JAGS) to go to Costa Rica in June 2019. Both trips are at no cost to the board.
