Each year, the Brad Detling Memorial Scholarship is awarded to qualifying Barnesville High School Senior(s) who are graduating and are furthering their educational careers at the collegiate level.
The scholarship is given in memory of Brad Detling, a 1999 graduate of Barnesville High School and a 2005 Ohio State University alumna who passed away in 2008 after a short bout with cancer.
Detling was a man who always put others’ interests before his own and his family and friends were paramount. He loved the outdoors, and one of his passions in life was spending time with those closest to him on his family farm in Somerton. The same values that Brad held dear are the same values that are looked for in those students applying for the Brad Detling Memorial Scholarship.
This year, the BHS Class of 2018 yielded four qualified recipients: Dulcie Christman, Darrah Detling, Erin Castello, and Brayden Reynolds. The scholarship amounts were awarded this past May at Barnesville High School’s Spring Awards Assembly and all four recipients recently embarked on their college careers. Dulcie is attending Wilmington College; Darrah is attending West Liberty University; Erin is attending Ohio University Eastern; and Brayden is attending the Ohio State University, Newark Campus.
Up until 2018, the proceeds from The Brad Detling Memorial Ridge Runner Classic (BDMRRC) 5K Walk and Run has been the main source of funding for the Brad Detling Memorial Scholarship. Due to many factors, however, family members and race organizers decided to discontinue the BDMRRC. We would like to thank all of those that have sponsored and supported the BDMRRC over the past seven years.
Even though the BDMRRC is no longer an event, those still wishing to make a tax deductible donation to the Brad Detling Memorial Scholarship may do so via the Barnesville Community Foundation. The Barnesville Community Foundation is a 501(3)(c) organization that was incorporated on Feb. 10, 1993. The purpose of the Foundation is to solicit and receive contributions and to distribute these funds for the cultural and economic development of the Village of Barnesville.
Those wishing to make a charitable contribution that will help Brad’s memory live on while also benefiting high school seniors in the Barnesville community may do so by sending donations (Marked Brad Detling Memorial) to the Barnesville Community Foundation, P.O. Box 256, Barnesville, OH 43713.
