Fun, fireworks on the lakes
The big July 4 celebration on the Portage Lakes is coming a couple days early this year. On Saturday, the Portage Lakes Fireworks Association caps a busy day at 10 p.m. with its annual fireworks display from Portage Lakes State Park, 5031 Manchester Road. The fireworks show will be simulcast on 91.3-FM The Summit. The rain date for the fireworks will be July 1. Also on Saturday is the annual boat parage at 1 p.m., in which decorated boats will wind their way through the lakes. The parade begins at Keifer Marina, 252 Portage Lakes Drive, and ends at the state park. At 2 p.m., at the state park will be the annual Sand Castle Building Contest, where people can register to compete for the best sand creation.
Princess and Pirate Day
The Akron Zoo will be offering Princess and Pirate Day from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. During the event, guests are encouraged to wear their favorite princess or pirate outfit and participate in a treasure hunt through the zoo with princess and pirate bingo.Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $9 for children (ages 2-14). - Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church will present its Ukrainian Festival from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday on the church grounds, 1866 Brown St., just north of East Waterloo Road. Parking and admission are free. The event is open to the public. The event will be held rain or shine. Food, entertainment, beer garden, church tours, raffles baskets and more.
