GREEN  During the March 15 Portage Lakes Career Center (PLCC) Board of Education meeting, Principal Michael Kaschak praised students for their hard work and success at recent competitions.

Kaschak reported competition news to the board beginning with the success of Automotive Technology students Daniel Knighton and Isaac Romine at the Greater Cleveland Automotive Technology Competition as they came home with the first-place trophy and a $5,000 scholarship and a 200-piece tool kit each.

"The PLCC staff is very proud of these two talented young men," he said.

He said congratulations were in order for students competing at the Regional SkillsUSA competition held at Trumbull County Career Technical Center. The students will be heading to Columbus to the state competition this month.

At the Business Professionals of America Conference in Columbus, Network Computer Technology student Jacob Davis placed fourth in Network Administration using Microsoft; and Brent Molea, placed first in SQL Database Fundamentals. The students will travel to the National Conference in Dallas this summer. 

Tuition rates were approved by the board for a variety of adult education courses including Phlebotomy Technician $1,795; Automotive Service Technician $7,995; Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration $7,995; Welding Technology $7,995; Medical Billing and Coding Technician $8,495; Medical Assisting $8,995; Practical Nursing $12,995; Cosmetology $14,995; Spa Technician $7,995; Esthetician $5,995; Nail Technician $1,995; Network Technician $7,995; and the cost of a Servsafe Manager’s Level II Certification is $225.

Current residents and alumni of PLCC’s four partner districts, Springfield, Green, Coventry and Manchester as well as veterans and immediate family members of PLCC staff can apply for one $1,000 scholarship toward full-time program enrollment or one $250 scholarship toward part-time program enrollment.

Other board approved business included a Power Purchase Agreement with Solar Optimizers, USA, and the purchase of a commercial camera system in the amount of $39,495 from R.J. Beck Protective Systems.

An equipment donation was approved from for the purpose of instructional use by HVAC Program for Capstone Helicopter Project of one RV rooftop air conditioner.

The board approved the revised board policies for attendance and removal, suspension, expulsion and permanent exclusion of students.
