JACKSON TWP. Take a trip down "Memory Lane" by attending one or more new, informal discussion groups starting in mid-April at the historical one-room schoolhouse at 7756 Fulton Drive next to Jackson High School.
Members of the Jackson Township Historical Society designed the series to get people to visit the one-room schoolhouse to share their memories and open up discussions on just about any topic. Mary Aaby, Doris Wertz and Lou Ann Manwaring, all members of the Historical Society, decided to start the series of talks one evening a month starting in April and going through October.
"We thought it would be good for the community and the Historical Society to have informal gatherings where everyone sits down and talks about any topic," Manwaring said.
The group will meet the second Thursday of every month. The schedule of topics to get the discussions started includes:
April 12: What Do You Like Best About Living in Jackson Township
May 10: Restaurants in Jackson Township, Past and Present
June 14: Favorite Summertime Activities/Favorite Place to Swim
July 12: Street Names Old and New in Jackson Township
August 9: Favorite Teachers
September 13: Sports Greats and Memorable Sports Moments
October 11: Childhood Memories of Halloween
"We think the gatherings will be an opportunity for the community to learn more about the history of the township," Wertz said. "Anyone and everyone is welcome to come including those who live in or out of the township."
They both said the format will be to have someone start the conversation and then let others add in their memories and information. The members are planning to layout photos and memorabilia collected by the Historical Society that are related to each topic for people to peruse. Everyone is invited to bring their own photos, stories and memorabilia to share with the group.
Wertz and Manwaring said they really want audience participation versus just one person talking. Reservations aren’t needed. People interested in attending can just stop by the historical schoolhouse.
