GREEN The Military Aviation Preservation Society (MAPS) Museum is noted for its full-size exhibits. Yet, there are dozens of other static displays of artifacts and memorabilia all around the museum. The latest one is a rotating display of models related to aviation and military history. It is located on the right just as you walk into the main hangar.
The models on display are made by members of the North East Ohio (NEO) Chapter of the International Plastic Model Society (IPMS). Several members of the organization belong to MAPS and put on displays at various MAPS events, most notably the pancake breakfasts sponsored throughout the year. IPMS is a world wide organization that encourages the art of model building. IPMS USA also publishes a bi-monthly journal that deals with modeling subjects and various products related to modeling.
The idea of the rotating display is to present various themes related to aviation history using scale models in various scales. While the main thrust of the displays will be aircraft, related topics may also be included. An example the current display deals with the entry of the US into World War II. In the display are a Seversky P-35 used in the Philippines; two P-40s in the markings of the famous Flying Tigers; the battleship USS Arizona, sunk at Pearl Harbor; a diorama of the USS Ward attacking a Japanese midget submarine hours before the actual attack on Pearl Harbor; a figure of a member of the 26 Calvary in the Philippines; and an M-3 tank in pre-war markings during the Louisiana War games in 1941, along with several books related to that time frame. This the second display put on by the group.
Future displays will include aircraft of the Vietnam War, the air war over Europe, the Israeli Air Force, the air war over Indochina, U.S. Navy fighters and the German Me-109. The idea is to create a varied display showing different aspects of aviation, often centering on rather obscure topics. The displays will be changed every few months so that they remain interesting and topical.
