ArtsInStark will kick off its annual arts campaign with a goal of raising $1.66 million.
ArtsInStark will kick off its annual arts campaign on Wednesday with a goal of raising $1.66 million.
The 2018 theme is Art Changing Lives. Money raised during the campaign goes toward the nonprofit organization's work in running the Cultural Center in downtown Canton and funding arts programs throughout Stark County.
Mark Sterling, president and CEO of Beaver Excavating, will chair the fund drive, which runs through May 16.
“I’m doing this because I’ve seen how the arts are revitalizing our downtowns and supercharging learning in our schools,” Sterling said in a news release.
“Mark is going to be the perfect leader for this year’s campaign ... He totally understands the impact the arts are having on our downtowns, our schools, and our neighborhoods," said ArtsinStark Board Chair Emil Alecusan in the release.
ArtsInStark has met its annual fund raising goal 12 years in a row. It's the only united arts fund drive in the country to hit that milestone, according to a news release.
Last year, the campaign raised $1.56 million.
The programs supported by the annual campaign reach more than 200,000 people a year, according to ArtsInStark.
Over the last 12 years, the organization has awarded $11 million in grants to the county's seven largest arts organizations — the Canton Ballet, Canton Museum of Art, Canton Symphony, Massillon Museum, Palace Theatre, Players Guild and Voices of Canton — and $1.6 million to smaller non-profits, schools and artists.
According to ArtsInStark, the organization also:
Funded $5 million in improvements to the Cultural Center.
Given $500,000 to SmArts programs in area schools.
Brought the Genius Program to Stark County middle schools.
Helped create 35 new new art galleries, restaurants, clubs and boutiques.
Supported the installation of 100 pieces of public art.
Supported the creation of the downtown Canton Arts District and its First Friday events.
Over the last decade, increased private sector donations to the arts by 8.5 percent.
