The Jackson Township church where Keith Simons and his family worship are helping the family with arrangements and expenses, according to social media posts.

JACKSON TWP.  A local church has stepped in to assist with funeral expenses for the Jackson Memorial Middle School student who died following a shooting incident at the school.

Keith Simons, 13, died Wednesday at Akron Children's Hospital from injuries suffered after what authorities have described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred Tuesday in a bathroom at about 7:50 a.m. just before classes started.

The New Harmony Worship Center, 3310 Wales Road NW, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements and accepting gifts to help, according to a post on its Facebook page. Anyone who helps "will be given statements for your gifts," the post states.

"We are Keith Simons church family. We are all in shock and in mourning after this week's tragic event. We are asking the community to help us assist this family in their time of need," the post states.

A GoFundMe site was opened for the family, but closed after New Harmony Worship Center stepped forward.

Jackson Township police and the Summit County Medical Examiner still are investigating Tuesday's shooting. On Wednesday police said they know that Simons hid a .22-caliber rifle under his clothing and took it with him as he rode a district bus to school. Police said they haven't been able to determine why Simons took the gun to school or whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

An autopsy report hadn't been finished and a ruling on the death will not be issued until police complete their investigation, a spokesman with the medical examiner's office said Thursday morning.
