Two men were transported to Akron City Hospital on Tuesday morning after a shooting involving officers from Lakemore and Springfield police departments.

Early Tuesday, the Lakemore Police Department received a call of a theft in progress at Tractor Supply, 1500 Canton Road, in the Lakemore Plaza.

The store was closed at the time, but at 4:46 a.m., an employee working inside overnight heard the merchandise alarm go off outside the front of the store. According to police, she saw a person attempting to load merchandise into a van. She then saw the van leave the area heading toward the back of Lakemore Plaza.

Lakemore Police located the van at 1271 Main Street in the village, and Springfield officers arrived to back up the Lakemore officers.

The driver of the van, according to a police report, put his vehicle in reverse and rammed the Lakemore cruiser that was parked behind the van. Shots were fired at the scene and two male subjects who were in the van were transported to Akron City Hospital.

Public Information Officer for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Jill Del Greco said no police officers were injured.

Del Greco confirmed that the Lakemore and Springfield Departments requested for the BCI to lead the investigation into the incident. They sent out investigators with the Special Investigations Unit as well as the Crime Scene Unit.

"What BCI is doing now is investigating to find out exactly what happened when police encountered the two individuals because it did lead to shots being fired," Del Greco said.
