CANTON  Shale Brewing Co., located in a former downtown foundry on Second Street SE, is relocating to Jackson Township.

Shale has confirmed it will be moving to the site of Scenic Brewing Co. at 7253 Whipple Ave. NW. At this spacious site, it will have a full brewing operation as well as a taproom.

Scenic, which opened in 2015, is closing due its owner Daniel Mueller relocating to Columbus for his military career.

"Scenic is (leaving at) the end of the month," Shale brewer Jason Gasper-Hulvat said. "The only thing not official at this point is (our) opening date."

The new location will allow Shale to open a taproom for sampling its beers, which is certain to expand the brewery's local visibility.

Originally a small operation founded by two friends, Shale owners Jeff Joliat and Jim Williams, the brewery expanded last year to a 10-barrel operation. Gasper-Hulvat, previously at Canton Brewing Co. and Thirsty Dog Brewing Co., joined Shale last July.

Shale is brewing four different beers which are available at numerous local stores and bars and in many Ohio locations. Distribution in West Virginia is coming soon.
