National School Choice Week seeks to bring awareness to the different education environments available.

Schools around Stark County will be hosting events this week to celebrate National School Choice Week and bring awareness to the different education environments available.

Ohio organizers estimate that 1,271 events and activities will be held across the state, including open house events at schools, school fairs and homeschool information sessions. Nationwide, more than 32,000 events and activities are planned.

School choice options in Ohio include traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies and homeschooling. Ohio also offers a private school choice program and tuition-free, public online schooling.

Among the local events being held are:

– Lake Center Christian School will be holding an open house at 4 p.m. Thursday that is open to the public. Students also will be performing the National School Choice dance during the celebration. The school, which has an enrollment of 630 students from preschool to 12th grade, is located at 12893 Kaufman Ave. NW in Lake Township. More information available at www.lccs.com.

– Ohio Virtual Academy will hold a skate celebration from noon to 1:50 p.m. Friday at Center Ice Sports Complex at 8319 Port Jackson Ave. NW in Jackson Township. The $5 admission includes a skate rental.

– Classical Conversations Canton where parents can learn about homeschooling will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Panera Bread at 4370 Belden Village St. NW in Jackson Township.

– St. Barbara School in Massillon will hold an event at 11:30 a.m. Sunday that will feature its students demonstrating the many types of learning they use, such as STEM, Google classroom and project-based learning. The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the school at 2809 Lincoln Way NW. St. Barbara has an enrollment of 80 students from preschool to eighth grade.
