AKRON  Anyone who drives near the central interchange is going to experience plenty of orange barrels and detours for the next several years.

Here is a breakdown of the current closures and the detours:

- The ramp from Interstate 77 northbound to I-76 westbound is closed through late August 2018. The detour is I-277 westbound to I-76/Kenmore Leg eastbound.

- The ramp from state Route 8 southbound to I-76 westbound is closed through late August 2019. The detour for this ramp is I-77 southbound to I-277 westbound to I-76/Kenmore leg eastbound.

- The ramp from Lakeshore Boulevard to I-76 eastbound is closed through late August 2018. The detour will be Lakeshore Boulevard to West Thorton Street to Grant Street to East Exchange Street to Spicer Street to Carroll Street to state Route 8.

- The ramp from I-76 eastbound to I-77 southbound will be closed through late August 2018. The detour will be I-76/Kenmore Leg westbound to I-277 eastbound to I-77 southbound.

Public Information Officer for ODOT District 4 Justin Chesnic said in addition to the ramp closures, I-76 eastbound and westbound from just east of state Route 59 to just east of the central interchange will be reduced to two lanes in each direction. All traffic will be crossed over to the westbound lanes of I-76 as work is done to the eastbound lanes.

"The closures are lengthy because we are reconstructing the pavement along I-76/I-77 in the Main/Broadway area," Chesnic said. "We have to reconstruct both sides of the pavement, each side will take a year. Once we get into phase and push all traffic onto one side of I-76 the ramps listed above have to be closed since the traffic would not be able to safely merge into the new traffic pattern on I-76."

Construction is being done in three different phases taking place in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

All the work on the highway is in conjunction with creating a new Main Street, which will carry traffic north and south and replace the current Broadway Street and Main Street. Chesnic said the entire project is on schedule.

"The work on the new Main Street should be completed by next summer and the main focus will soon shift to the major work on the highway," Chesnic said.
