Towpath Freedom 5K
Support veterans and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail on Nov. 11 during the Towpath Freedom 5k. The event begins at Lock 3 Park, 200 S. Main St., Akron. Same-day registration and packet pick-up takes place at 7:30 a.m., the ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. The event will kick off with a flag ceremony and National Anthem in honor of Veteran’s Day and pins will be presented to those who have served. All proceeds will benefit the Ohio & Erie Canalway and the Towpath Trail. Race day registration will be $35. Runners will be timed with computer chips attached to their bib with results available on race day. All participants are welcome to enjoy post-race food and beverages. Veterans Day ceremony
The City of Green’s Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 11 at Green Veterans Memorial Park, 1900 Steese Road. The ceremony will include music from the sixth- and seventh-grade choirs. The guest speaker is Dr. John McManus, professor of U.S. military history at Missouri University of Science and Technology and award-winning author of military history including "Deadly Sky" and "September Hope." The city will honor two local veterans for their service. Following the ceremony, a light lunch will be served at Queen of Heaven Parish Life Center, 1800 Steese Road. Parking for the ceremony will be available at the Fire Station, John Torok Senior and Community Center and Queen of Heaven Church.
Brooke McMahan swim meet
The Brooke McMahan Memorial Invitational Swim Meet draws will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium. Summit County Judges Tom Teodosio and Linda Tucci Teodosio will lead the athletes in the oath. The event is funded by donations so that all athletes can take part. The meet is hosted by the Summit Special Olympic Athletic Club and is named for a Green High School graduate who died unexpectedly during a seizure in 2003. McMahan was a volunteer for the Humane Society and worked as an assistant swimming instructor for the YMCA. Admission is free. For more information, call Cathy Parker at 330-819-0591.
