Getting in touch with nature
People of all ages can stop by the Summit Metro Parks' Nature Play area in Goodyear Heights, along Alder Trail, to engage in fun, hands-on experiences with nature from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 3. A naturalist will be on hand to help guide you. Getting dirty is encouraged, so dress appropriately. Later in the evening, join staffmembers Goodyear Heights Metro Parks for a program on bats from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nets will be set up to try to catch live bats for observation and data collection. Both events take place at the Pioneer Area, 550 Frazier Ave. For information, call 330-865-8065.
Rib, White and Blue
Today through July 3, the city of Akron presents Rib, White and Blue, Akron's National Rib Festival in South Main Street downtown. Admission is free and gates open at 11 a.m. Twelve rib vendors from two countries and five states will compete. Visit www.lock3live.com/ for the schedule of musical entertainment. Fireworks complete the event July 3 at 9:45 p.m.
Falls Cares 5K
The Falls Cares 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run will be held by the Falls Cancer Club on July 8. The funds paid by the runners/walkers go directly to Cuyahoga Falls cancer patients. Medals are given for overall first, second and third places for men/women and first, second and third for specific age groups. The Kids Fun run is for those up to age 7 and they all receive a winners ribbon. Kids Fun Run starts at 8 a.m. with the 5K immediately following. The events start and end at First Christian Church at the corner of Stow and Second Street.
