NEW FRANKLIN Work will begin in July on the first phase of resurfacing of Center Road from Main Street to Eastview as New Franklin City Council during the June 21 meeting awarded the bid for the project to Northstar Asphalt of North Canton for $686,818.80.
The project is funded through the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) Resurfacing Program. The total cost inclusive of engineering, construction, and construction inspection will be $732,000, said Joshua Slaga, project manager at GPD Group. The GPD group is hired by the city to serve as consulting engineer.
The City of New Franklin will pay 20 percent of the construction cost, according to Susan Cooke, New Franklin city treasurer.
The first phase of the resurfacing is expected to last four weeks, Slaga said.
The second phase of resurfacing of Center Road going west to Cleveland-Massillon Road will be up for bid in the winter 2017 with construction anticipated in the spring of 2018, Slaga said. The cost is estimated at approximately $900,000. The project is also funded through the AMATS Resurfacing Program.
In other road project updates, Mayor Al Bollas stated at the June 7 meeting that the widening of State Route 93 from Vanderhoof Road to the Dollar General entrance will be completed in early July. Sidewalks will be completed on the east side of the road from Southcrest Apartments to Renninger Road in mid-July. Todd Armstrong, owner of Southcrest Apartments, has agreed to sell part of his property to allow the city to create a bike trail.
A dry sewer sanitary system was completed on the west side of Route 93 as part of the project in anticipation of the city adding a sewer system in the future and connecting to the system in the city of Barberton.
Mayor Bollas also announced on June 21 that he is working with the city of Green to apply for AMATS funding to pave South Main Street from East Caston to Mount Pleasant Road. This proposal will include drainage replacement. Bollas said he is planning to ask the Ohio Public Works Commission to partner in the project.
