Learn about purple martins

Celebrate purple martins, the birds that are aerial acrobats and important insect-eaters, from 2-4 p.m. June 24 at the Buckeye Martinfest located at Portage Lakes State Park, 809 State Mill Road. Visitors can learn about the birds’ amazing intercontinental journey and the history of the purple martin project. Those interested may feed scrambled eggs to the martins and help with data collection for the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association. Tour of Gardens

The Master Gardeners of Summit County will hold the 2017 Tour of Gardens highlighting six Gardens of Distinctions and one special Secret Garden available to patrons on June 24. Online registration for the tour is available at summitmastergardeners.org and at Dayton Nursery and Garden Center, 3459 Cleveland-Massillon Road; Donzell's Garden Center, 937 E. Waterloo Road; Graf Growers Garden Center, 1015 White Pond Drive; Smith Bros. Garden Center, 1285 N. Cleveland Massillon Road; and Suncrest Gardens, 5157 Akron-Cleveland Road. Cost is $20. Woofstock fundraiser

Bring your dog and join in One of A Kind Pet Rescue's Woffstock, a dog-friendly fundraising festival from noon to 4 p.m. June 25 at the Adoption Center, 1929 W. Market St., Akron. Woofstock will feature music by three different artists, Stray Dog Café food trucks will be on-site, as well as kettle corn, other vendors and dog friendly events. Toby Franks, of Franks Ferals and former Clinic Manager at One of A Kind Pets Spay and Neuter Clinic will be available for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) questions. All proceeds from the festival will benefit One of A Kind Pet Rescue and RunningDog. RunningDog is a program at One of A Kind Pet Rescue for runners who volunteer their time to run the rescue dogs for socialization and exercise.
