NORTH CANTON  The “force” made famous by the Star Wars movies worked against holding the first summer of fun event in North Canton outside on May 19.

The North Canton Public Library, North Canton Chamber of Commerce, North Canton YMCA and the North Canton Jaycees joined forces to offer a free public showing of the latest Star Wars movie, “Rogue One: a Star Wars Story.” The event was moved indoors due to inclement weather.

While the event may have been held inside the North Canton YMCA, the rain didn’t stop local residents and avid Star Wars fans from attending and enjoying the pre-show activities, hot dogs, popcorn and family time together waiting for the movie to start. Christina Weyrick, community relations manager at the North Canton Public Library, said the event was scheduled as an outdoor movie in Bitzer Park.

“We planned to have it under the stars in Bitzer Park but we always had a backup plan of moving into the YMCA if it rained, Weyrick said. “The four groups are partnering together this evening to promote all of the summer events scheduled to be held in and around the downtown area of North Canton. We also have other outdoor family movies scheduled in Witwer Park on June 9, July 14 and Aug. 11."

Other summer fun events include the summer reading program at the library for kids and adults of all ages, Epic Summer Kick-Off, Patio Parties at the library, Doggone North Canton, North Canton Jaycee Fair on 7th Street, Annual 4th of July Parade, Community Celebration and Fireworks on July 4th, the 40th Annual 4th of July Race and much more.

Weyrick said she thought this was the first free showing of the latest Star Wars movie in the area.

“When I saw the licensing was available for this movie, I just thought a Star Wars themed event would be a great way to reach people with information about the many other events happening throughout the summer,” she said.

There was plenty to do while waiting for the movie start in the packed gym inside the YMCA. The North Canton Chamber of Commerce was selling raffle tickets for their Wagon Full of Summer Fun that has prices worth more than $2,500. Check the chamber’s website for details at

The YMCA Child Development Center was hosting Star Wars themed craft tables. The North Canton Jaycees were cooking hot dogs and making popcorn and cotton candy. Plus, the 501st Legion had some of their actors come dressed in Star Wars gear and costumes and were taking pictures with kids and adult fans.
