NEW FRANKLIN Completion of the State Route 93 widening project in New Franklin is ahead of schedule and expected to be completed by early July, according to New Franklin Mayor Al Bollas, who updated New Franklin City Council at the April 19 meeting.
"It is moving along very well," Bollas said. "I know we have had some traffic delays, but the contractor is making progress.
"I would like to get most of the project complete before the 4th of July for the Portage Lakes Fireworks Association show which is Saturday, July 1," he added.
The project involved widening a section of State Route 93 between Vanderhoof and Renninger roads. The widening project runs south to the Dollar General Store entrance.
It involves adding a third lane for turning along with a traffic light at Renninger Road. Additionally, the plan calls for the widening of Johns Road near the HiWay Distributing business to allow for truck traffic going north on Manchester Road. The project would also add a sidewalk for walkers from Vanderhoof Road south to Renninger Road.
The city has already earmarked $375,000 from the road fund for the project, with remainder of funding coming from several sources. A total of $150,000 has been earmarked from the Ohio Community jobs fund and $225,000 from Jobs Ohio. The Summit County Transportation Improvement District has received $250,000 towards the project from ODOT. The remainder of the project is funded by the OPWC.
In other road business updates, Bollas reported that bids through the Summit County Engineers Office for the 422 Chip and Seal paving program have come in below estimates. The bid came in at $258,498.75.
"I have a good feeling we can make this happen this season," he said.
He will produce a final list of streets to receive chip and seal at the May 3 meeting. The funds will come from the road department fund.
Bollas also reported that the Vanderhoof Road bridge replacement across the Tuscarawaas River will begin in mid-May, with the road to be closed from mid-May through most of the summer. East and west traffic will be detoured to Center Road.
