NEW PHILADELPHIA The owner of Pace-Sankar Landscaping is touting express service and bulk products at his new business venture, opening early next month.
Mike Pace is launching Pace Landscape Supply LLC in the former Glass Lumber lumber yard at 428 Carrie Ave. It's a place where folks can drive right in and choose from 13 different types of mulch to buy and leave with a truck full of the product.
Pace, who has owned Pace-Sankar Landscaping since 2003, purchased the property from former Glass Lumber owners and siblings, Tom Glass and Barb Cooper. Glass and Cooper recently retired from the business and in March, the Glass Lumber was sold to Holmes Lumber in Dover.
Pace purchased only the lumber yard. The former Glass Lumber office at the corner of Fourth Street and Carrie Avenue sits vacant. All the business transactions and purchases were managed by Howard Hanna realtor Dan Pitzo.
"The key to our operation is we make our own mulch," Pace said about his new venture. He's been an employee of Pace-Sankar Landscaping for 32 years. "We control the quality of the product."
Pace Landscape Supply is scheduled to have a soft opening May 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After that, Pace said he plans to have a grand opening the week leading up to Mother's Day on May 14. The business will be open Tuesday to Sunday with hours still pending.
What makes Pace Landscape Supply unique, Pace said, is what the company offers and how easy it'll be for customers to buy bulk landscape supplies, including 10 different types of decorative stone.
All of the 13 different types of mulch — including different colors — will be made by the company. The mulch is made from the raw products of trees, where it can be grinded two or three times and color can be added. There will be a variety of hardwood mulch and bark mulch that will be contained in 47 bays right on the property.
All materials can be bagged or loaded directly into trucks with a Bobcat using a one-yard bucket. Prices start at $18 per bucket. Pace said about three buckets could make a heaping pile in the bed of a pickup truck. There will be a showroom with mulch samples and pre-orders can be made for express pickup.
"You don't have to worry about going to buy bags that have been sitting around for a long time that are all moldy," Pace said. "You can come in, pick out the mulch you want and we bag it right on the spot."
Pace Landscape Supply will also sell limestone, gravel, sand, tomato and grape stakes, straw, and different types of top soil. In the winter, kiln-dried firewood and buckets of salt will be for sale. In addition to manager Dick Beck, Pace said the business will be ran by four employees.
The business office on Carrie Avenue can be reached at 330-364-8660. A website will be available at PaceLandscapeSupply.com.
