AKRON A 38-year-old Norton man was sentenced to seven years in prison by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Christine Croce for his role in a fatal accident on I-77 in Coventry Township that killed a 39-year-old woman.
Brandon Pheneger, 38, of Wadsworth Road in Norton, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony, and driving under the influence, a first-degree misdemeanor, for driving drunk on I-77 South when his pick-up truck turned left into the median and went airborne into oncoming traffic. Pheneger's truck hit a car driven by Rachel Townsend, who was traveling northbound. Townsend was killed in the wreck.
Investigators determined Pheneger's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
"Rachel lost her life because a selfish, senseless act," said Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Beaven Walsh in a news relase. "Her husband, father, family and friends are devestated because of one person's decision to drink and drive. Although Mr. Pheneger must serve every day of his seven-year sentence, it will not ease the suffering of Rachel's family has endured. This is a horrible reminder of drinking and driving."
