HARTVILLE  It was part scavenger hunt and part escape room. Fifty players took on the challenge in the first It's Puzzling event in Historic Downtown Hartville on April 8. The event was a puzzle competition and egg hunt.

The players worked in teams and raced the clock to solve a series of puzzles by finding hidden objects, cracking codes and tracking down local history. It was the first of two public hunts planned. A second opportunity to play is scheduled for April 22.

The teams, which can include up to eight players, are given up to two hours to finish the challenge.

"The title of Top Detective is awarded to the team with the fastest solve time for each event day," said Megan Wise, event coordinator with Historic Downtown Hartville. "We wanted to host an event downtown that would appeal to a variety of ages. All puzzles can be solved in a walkable two block area and costs break down to less than a movie. I love that the hunt encourages people to put their heads together and is great for a group of friends or a family and even works as a team building activity."

Wise said the teams came out for the morning with babies in strollers, families with young kids and teams of adults taking on the challenge. Puzzles included an egg hunt, code breaking, I Spy, and a "Clue"-like game.

The top time for the April 8 event came from Team 'Cmon with a time of 39 minutes. All teams enjoyed pizza and treats donated by Pizza BOGO Hartville and Hartville Chocolate Factory after the game.

"Many thanks to participants, Visit Canton, Lake Community Federal Credit Union, Best Bib and Tucker, Lake Township Chamber of Commerce, Village of Hartville, and Peace, Love and Little Donuts of Hartville, and the Historic Downtown Hartville merchants for helping with today's fun. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit events and improvement projects in Hartville's historic downtown," Wise said.

For those interested in attending the April 22 event, team captains can register their group online at www.discoverhartville.com/downtown or at Best Bib and Tucker. The cost per team is $40. Puzzles are best suited for people ages 12 and older. For more information, contact puzzle hunt coordinator Megan Wise at 330-877-3308 or email historichartville@gmail.com.
