Ohio Department of Transportation's traffic report shows that the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 near the Akron-Canton Airport were closed Wednesday evening due to an accident. Passers-by reported that they could see black smoke miles away.
GREEN What appears to be a car fire near the Akron-Canton Airport temporarily halted traffic in the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 Wednesday evening.
The northbound lanes on the interstate eventually were reopened late Wednesday night. The Ohio Department of Transportation's online traffic dashboard reported that shortly after 7 p.m. a car accident closed the northbound lanes of the interstate and advised motorists to avoid the area.
Drivers on Interstate 77 reported seeing black smoke billowing into the sky from roughly a mile away. Photos shared with The Canton Repository show a charred four-door compact car sitting along the side of the interstate.
At one point, as of 7:30 p.m., traffic was at a near standstill between the Portage Street exit and north of the airport.
One passer-by said the northbound entrance to Interstate 77 from the airport was blocked by a sheriff deputy's car.
A Summit County Sheriff's Office dispatcher confirmed that deputies responded, but declined to provide further information without authorization from a supervisor. No additional details were immediately available.
