CANTON Hundreds of seniors came from Stark, Tuscarawas and Summit counties to spend the day at the 27th Annual Canton Senior Expo at the Cultural Center in downtown Canton on April 5. The event included information on living facilities and healthcare services in the area, medical screenings and games.
This year, there was a booth for friends and family to take a photo. The highly favored "Price is Right" and Bingo games were well attended. All of this, and a bagged lunch provided by Chick-fil-A, made it a perfect day to get out and enjoy being with friends and family.
One group of friends were taking a few minutes to eat their lunch together were Elaine Williams, Carol Kasper, Beverly Houchins and Marlin Grohl.
"We come to this event every year together, Marlin is always our designated driver," Kasper said. "It’s just a great way to spend the day out together. We also go home with lots of new information."
There was plenty of giveaways from the 60 vendors. The Canton Museum of Art hosted a free make-and-take art activity, a Prize Wheel sponsored by CareSource included many prizes and there were many free health screenings.
Grip strength, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), balance screenings, glucose and bone density checks were just a few screenings offered by Aultman. Dana Yurkovich of Event Day Marketing said the day is always topped off with free root beer floats.
"One of the most popular features of the day is the root beer floats provided by Taggart’s Ice Cream Parlor, they’ve been providing the floats for 15 years," Yurkovich said. "We have many returning seniors every year and lots of new visitors. We’re here to spring into wellness and we love serving the seniors every spring. The event provides seniors with free information and they can take part in the health screenings. Plus, they just have a fun time socializing and getting out for the day," she said.
Aultman Hospital sponsored the event. Other sponsors included Sprenger Health Care Systems, CareSource, SARTA and Insurance Advisors.
