Three one-year old Sumatran tigers are now on exhibit at the Akron Zoo in the zoo’s Tiger Valley. The three brothers will be on exhibit daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The tigers, born March 2008, arrived from the San Francisco Zoo last month. The tigers have been getting acclimated to their surroundings and will now be on exhibit daily. The zoo’s previous male tiger, Rojo, has moved to his new home at the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, IL. The Akron Zoo has housed Sumatran tigers since Tiger Valley opened in 1998.
Sumatran tigers are indigenous to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Like all species of tigers, the Sumatran tiger is an endangered species. Currently there are only five subspecies of tigers that exist: Bengal, Indochinese, Chinese, Siberian, and Sumatran. The Caspian, Javan and Bali tigers are all extinct. Currently there are only about 100-400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild.
