The public is invited to the Massillon Public Library for a free showing of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” at 6 p.m. May 14 as part of The Big Read 2012.
First published in 1843, this short story follows an unnamed narrator who insists that his sanity is intact after murdering an old man who had a “vulture eye.” The murder is carefully calculated, and the murderer hides the body by dismembering it and hiding it under the floorboards. Ultimately the narrator’s guilt manifests itself in the hallucination that the man’s heart is still beating under the floorboards.
Following the movie, attendees are invited to remain for light refreshments and a discussion of the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” led by Massillon Public Library Director, Sherie Brown. The Big Read 2012 is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read in Western Stark County is coordinated by the Massillon Museum and many partners in Stark County.
No registration is required for this free program. For more information stop by or call the library at 330-832-5037 or log onto the library’s website www.massillonlibrary.org. The Massillon Public Library is located at 208 Lincoln Way East. Free parking is available directly across Second Street from the library’s ground-level entrance, which is handicapped accessible.
