Scott McCue is Jackson Township born and raised.

He graduated from Canton Central Catholic, the son of a home builder. After graduating from Bowling Green State University with a degree in building construction management and technology, Scott returned home to Jackson to start his own business.

“Dad is in the new construction industry and I grew up around it,” said Scott of his father, John. “I wanted to build too.”

Scott had many job opportunities after graduating from Bowling Green in 1995, but he elected to strengthen his Jackson roots and establish his custom homebuilding business in Jackson Township.

“I haven’t looked back since,” said Scott from his 3821 Wales Ave. office.

Recently, Scott’s business, Scott McCue Homes, earned the distinction of becoming Jackson’s only builder as a Certified Green Professional. The designation means Scott has the knowledge for incorporating building principals into a home that saves energy, conserves water and enhances the environment.

“Building a green home is affordable,” said Scott. “Often it’s the simple things to decrease energy usage. It’s using efficient heating and cooling systems, eliminating energy leakage around doors and windows and using EnergyStar appliances. Over time, there’s a return on the homeowner’s investment.”

A “green” home’s design, construction and operation focuses on energy and water conservation. It features considerations such as using the lot and trees, using low flow toilets, hot water tanks that are energy-efficient and using renewable materials like bamboo in wood products.

“The technology to do this is improving and the cost has come down,” said Scott.

Operating costs for a green home are generally lower and a green home has a good resale value.

Incorporating green technology into a remodeling project is affordable too, said Scott.

“We enjoy sharing information about a green home,” said Scott. “It’s good for our environment and it’s the responsible thing to do.”

Whether the project is new home construction or a remodeling project, Scott said the first step is talking at length with his customers.

“Our forte is providing the best customer experience. We’re small enough that we work with our clients one-on-one. We’re about quality, not quantity.”

The company offers in-house drafting.

“We’ve taken plans scratched out on a napkin,” said Scott. “We talk with our clients and determine what is most important to them.”

Scott, who has won numerous industry awards, said the industry is seeing a trend of smaller homes. Customers are looking for with less maintenance and using high quality products.

“People are paying close attention to the operating costs of a home,” said Scott.

Scott McCue Homes’ model home is located in Spring Landing, off Lake O’ Springs, south of Portage. The model is open Sundays 2-5 p.m. or by appointment.

Scott’s dad, John, assists in sales and works closely with banks and borrowers.
