About an hour or two north, along the shores of Lake “Eerie,” are some spooky and some fun Halloween events for families and adults. From wineries to “Boo at the Boardwalk,” there is something for everyone.
FAMILY TIME
• “HalloWeekends” at Cedar Point is a tame, family-friendly Halloween adventure that offers plenty of children’s activities. The activities, such as a themed parade, costume contest and Planet Spooky are just for the kids. Then, at night, the fun house is where the fearless are found. The Screamsters roam four haunted houses and six horrifying walks. New to the event this year are Eden Musee, a petrifying wax museum and the Cut Throat Cove, which is an outdoor pirate-themed show.
• Oct. 27 is a fun, family day along the lake. “The Tombstone Derby” is for everyone, with pumpkin carving and pie baking contests, ghoulish food, a haunted historic cabin, parade of fools, magical market and craft vendors. Take Fido and enter the pet Halloween costume contest. Don’t miss the annual body toss contest and, of course, motorized casket races.
• Also on Oct. 27, the free event “Boo a the Boardwalk” along the Magee Marsh Boardwalk in Oak Harbor offers a number of activities. Children can visit the stations along the boardwalk to learn about wildlife, and there are plenty of treats and surprises along the way.
• For those interested in zombies, Zombie Proms and the Zombie Walk at the Merry Go Round Museum offer a chance to spend an afternoon with the undead.
ADULTS ONLY
• Those looking for a ghostly good time can try the inn keeper’s ghost stories of history, romance and spirits in the historic downtown area of Port Clinton and join in “Ghost Walks with Victoria.”
• Continuing with the ghostly theme, take in the action at the Sandusky State Theater. Guest paranormal investigators from popular television programs will provide lectures and ghost hunts. Legend has it that this theater is haunted by at least four spirits. On Sunday, John Zaffis, a nationally known paranormal investigator, demonologist and host of the Sy-Fy Channel’s “Haunted Collector” will be on hand to talk ghosts. Also, there are opportunities to explore the theater with the Firelands Paranormal Society on a ghost hunt.
• “Fearfest” is where the legendary “Ghostly Manor” meets up with the mysterious legends of Lake Erie. Ghostly Manor has been seen on Travel Channel’s “Best Places I’ve Ever Been.” This is a most-feared haunted destination with six acres of haunted action.
• Finally, two wineries on the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Wine Trail offer spirit-filled tours. Then, take in a Ghost Hunt at the Sandusky State Theater or a Ghost Walk through historic Sandusky.
A visit to the shores of Lake Erie will provide plenty of spooky options and plenty of things to do. Make a weekend of it and spend some time exploring history, wineries and enjoy the fall foliage.
