A restaurant in the Shops of Green has introduced a 50 Famous Burger Challenge.
Menches Brothers’ “THE 50” dares participants to try all 50 of the burgers on the restaurant’s official list.
Owner Linda Menches-Aleman came up with the idea after patrons asked if Menches would consider offering a challenge to try all 50 burgers on the menu.
“People liked the idea of a 50-burger challenge. The idea gradually evolved from there,” Menches-Aleman said. “We decided to do this to give people another reason for coming in here. It gives people a reason to talk about our burgers and lets them know about the different types we have.”
Burgers on the challenge list include a turkey burger, the Cheese Stick burger (fried cheese sticks, Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce, lettuce and tomato) and “Bobbalouie,” the winner of the 2006 National Hamburger Festival. The Bobbalouie is a double burger topped with American and cheddar, fresh sauteed mushrooms and onions, smoked bacon and “Big Mench Sauce.”
Diners sign up and get a card and their name on a chart on the wall. As each burger is ordered, it’s marked off the chart and punched on the card. Every 10th burger is free. Those who try all 50 burgers will receive a $25 gift certificate and a burger T-shirt. There is no time limit to finish the challenge.
“It started in mid-November, and so far 23 people have signed up,” Menches-Aleman said. “The original chart is almost filled up so I have to order another one. It has really taken off very well so far, based on just word of mouth. People seem to like it.”
Brown sugar and coffee add to the flavor of the burgers at Menches, which are made fresh daily. Menches-Aleman said the restaurant goes through about 300 pounds of meat for 1,000 hamburgers a week.
Menches claims to be the inventor of the hamburger. Frank and Charles Menches ran out of sausage meat at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, NY, in 1885. They bought some ground beef and spiced it up with brown sugar and coffee and made sandwiches, calling them hamburgers in a nod to the town’s name.
