Springfield TWP, Ohio —
For more than 15 years, members of the Springfield Township Woman's Club (STWC) have donated a tree to the Akron Children's Hospital Tree Festival.
The group is usually successful, and this year was no exception. The tree they donated this year was sold before the event opened to the public Nov. 17.
“I arrived at the preview party at 7 p.m., and our tree was sold before I got there,” club president Kathy Valent said.
The tree, “Angels and Elegance,” was decorated with handmade wooden ornaments consisting of angels and musical notes.
The group’s 2007 tree, “Crimson and Ice,” was purchased and sent to South Africa.
It takes a team of crafty women (and men) to pull off the decorating and set up each year.
“The husbands help a lot with the heavy stuff, cutting out ornaments and transporting the tree,” said club member Wanda Beasley, who takes a special interest in helping Children’s Hospital. Her son, Tom, was born two months premature, weighing just four pounds.
“My interest in the Tree Festival takes me back to 1968...he had Hyaline Membrane Disease (an infant respiratory distress syndrome). He spent 30 days in their ICU unit,” she said.
The team of Valent, Beasley, Jane Fulton, Mary Moore, Pat Rossi and Phyllis Snyder seems to create a winner every year. This year, Fulton’s water aerobics buddy, Thaya Smith, filled in in the absence of faithful tree committee member Liz Iler, who had surgery.
Smith has wanted to participate for many years, so when she was asked to join in, she jumped right in cutting out and painting wooden angels.
“It was fun, I totally loved it,” Smith said. “I was sad to see it over.”
