A non-profit organization in North Canton will combine fun, food and fundraising at a local wine bar next week.
Twenty-two local artists answered the call to submit original, wine-themed art pieces for the fundraiser. An opening is set for 7- 9 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Barrel Room. Guests can sample hors d'oeuvres, cheese and vegetables along with vino at, “Wine Not Support the Arts?”
The New Work City Foundation, a regional non-profit organization, is hosting the exhibit at the the Barrel Room, 7901 Cleveland Ave., NW. Artwork will remain on display through March 3.
The opening reception will include live music performed by Mark Loy, as well as gift-basket and 50-50 raffles.
Although donations will be accepted, “Wine Not Support the Arts?” is free to those 21 and over. Proceeds will benefit the New Work City Foundation, which distributes grants to businesses and organizations in Stark County for the purpose of creating jobs.
“We raise money, and we give all that money back to the community in the form of grants to companies or organizations to hire people,” said founder Vicki Stanley.
“It has to be for jobs – it can't be for the sign or the copier, or furniture – it has to be for wages,” she said.
The group has expanded its role with a recent hire of its own. New Work City has added the position of art outreach coordinator, filled in January by Elizabeth Blakemore, “to grow the arts in our community,” Stanley said.
In addition to Stanley, the New Work City Board of Directors includes: John Allensworth; Joan Cauley; Jim Dansizen; Teresa Dolan; Phyllis Mussina; Alissa Snodgrass; Matthew Sutter; Jeff Ury; and, Kathy Yaros.
Visitors to the Barrel Room can vote their favorite artist in the exhibit for the People's Choice Award through Feb. 25. The first-place winner will be awarded a $200 cash prize and a North Canton community gift basket; the second-place winner will receive $50 and a North Canton community gift basket.
“It's absolutely amazing to see what people can do with the wine-based theme,” Stanley said.
