Ohio law was passed that requires boaters born on or after Jan. 1, 1982 to successfully complete either a Boater Education course or a proficiency exam if they are going to operate a boat with a 10 horsepower motor or more. This applies to operators and supervising adults. The law currently affects young adults but will eventually affect everyone that operates a boat with more than the allotted horsepower.

The seventh annual Polar Bear Jump sponsored by the Portage Lakes Polar Bear Club will be making its way back to the Portage Lakes State Park this February.

Author and journalist David Giffels, will present the Eckler Lecture at Mount Union College on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall.
Giffels, a longtime Akron Beacon Journal columnist, is a creative writing professor at the University of Akron. He is the author of All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-down House. This memoir about his coming of age as a father in a ramshackle mansion, is a 2009 winner of the Ohioana Book Award. He is also the co-author of "Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!" and "Wheels of Fortune: The Story of Rubber in Akron."
Jackson High School has rescheduled the Financial Aid Information Meeting for the parents of high school seniors for Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. A representative from the office of student financial aid at Kent State University will be there to present information and answer questions regarding the entire financial aid process. This meeting is beneficial for parents of high school seniors who are attending any college in the fall of 2010.

“Praying for Abbey,” Versatile Dance Company’s premier performance, will bring together 15 dancers to tell the story of Abbey Colbert, a young girl diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia at the age of 3. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as well as Colbert’s family to help give her story a happy ending.
