The Fifth Annual Hike for Hearts is set for Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Goodyear Metro Park on Newton Street.

Called Alyssa’s Hike, the purpose of the event is to provide funds to raise awareness and find a cure for viral myocarditis. Research at Cleveland Clinic is being conducted by Dr. Gerard Boyle, head of cardiology and Dr. Janine Arrude, pediatric cardiology. The funds are also donated to Camp Carl. Over the past four years, $100,000 has been raised.

On Sept. 9, 2002, Alyssa Ann Calaway was an 8-year old, perfectly healthy little girl. She developed flu-like symptoms that day. She went to the hospital to receive an IV. As she walked into the hospital, she collapsed and died in the ER.

Alyssa’s family was absolutely devastated. They learned Alyssa had a virus which had left her body but her immune system worked so hard to kill the virus that it turned on itself and destroyed her heart.

This disease affects all ages. One-third of those who have it die. One third remain on antibiotics for the remainder of their life and one-third becomes well.

No one knows why this happens. Research is needed.

Alyssa wanted to attend camp but she died before she could attend.

Therefore, Alyssa’s family conducts the annual hike to raise funds for both research and the camp Alyssa never got to attend.

“So this event addresses both hearts,” said Mary Homsher, Alyssa’s grandmother. “The physical through Cleveland Clinic Research, and the spiritual through Camp Carl
scholarships. “

The Sept. 19 hike is 1.8 miles. The hike is actually optional. There is a continental breakfast, lunch, entertainment, a clown, a silent auction and prizes.
