Green, Ohio -

Green High School was one of only two Summit County schools to receive a grant to help fund  their "Seniors To Sophomores " program. The other one to receive funding was Akron Public Schools.

This program allows students, mainly seniors to take college credits so when they enter college they will have enough credits to be listed as sophomores. Green received a total of $99,000 to help with the implementation of this program.

"This program will help expand the post secondary options available to students," said Green High Assistant Principal Cindy Brown. "It will open up more options for more students to take college courses. It also will not affect the Advance Placement (AP) program but give additional students different ways to participate in getting college credit."

Students will have several options available to them. They may attend college full time, split their time between the college and Green, or take classes at Green. The college and Green will share state funding with roughly 75 percent of the state funding coming back to Green when the students attend full time at the college.

The requirements to participate include being a senior, passing all parts of the OGT, have a C or better in language arts, have taken Functions or higher in math with a C or better. Students will take the ACT or SAT test and have a certain score which has yet to be determined by the school. This score will be in line with the college requirement.

The program will involve participation with Akron University, Kent State Stark, and Stark State College of Technology. The program will start in the Fall of 2008.
To continue receiving funding Green must show it can sustain the program over the long term. In addition it will be constantly evaluated to be sure it meets the needs of the students.

In addition to having faculty rated to teach college classes in the school, students will also be provided with an academic advisor to help them with any problems that arise. There will also be a transition seminar to help students adjust to the challenges of going from a high school-type environment to college.
