The Springfield Spartans dominated the Crestwood Red Devils 33-14, keeping them at bay for all but a late comeback attempt in another run-dominated game.

An early Spartan 31-yard drive was capped off by a 15 yard run for the score by junior running back Zach Talbert. Talbert carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards for the game.

Springfield (5-2) took to the air with a handoff from senior quarterback Steven Cole and a pass from junior wide receiver Chase Cole to senior wide receiver Joey O’Neil, who ran it 75 yards for a touchdown, putting Springfield up 13-0 in the second quarter.

Springfield drove home another score after a 51-yard drive, sophomore running back Dillon Matthews leading the pack with 35 yards on the drive. Matthews would carry the ball 12 times for 141 yards and 3 touchdowns. Matthews playing a key role in Springfield’s aggressive offense, totaling 384 yards for the night.

The Spartans put together an early third-quarter, 51-yard drive for another touchdown, making it 26-0.

Springfield drove 67 yards for their final score of the night, Matthews turning on the jets and running 45 yards to make it 33-0.

Crestwood’s (1-6) offense drove for 258 yards, but Springfield’s defense managed to hold them at bay until the fourth quarter, when senior running back Dakota Long broke a 45-yard run for the score. Long led Crestwood’s offense, carrying the ball 29 times for 205 yards and scoring again after a 19-yard run later in the quarter.
