Judi Sammons’ friends and family are working together to help her through a difficult time in her life. In April she was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, which is a rare and aggressive type of cancer. Judi, laid off from her job, is without medical insurance, and being in her second round of chemo, the bills are mounting.
Those who know her best, her family and the girls of her euchre club, who have been together for 25 years, are working hard to put on a Hawaiian fun-filled night, a luau and pig roast on July 16.
“The goal is to raise funds to help offset the medical expenses,” said her sister, Dee Rummel.
“We are so blessed to have such wonderful support from family, friends and the community,” she said.
Judi is a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Springfield High School (Judi Iverson). She and her husband Dave have been married for 24 years and have four children, their son Matt who is currently serving in Iraq and daughters, Christina Sommers, Stephanie Sammons and Michelle Warren. They also have two grandchildren with another on the way.
“Judi has been my best friend for my entire life. We are 17 months apart,” said Rummel. She added that Judi has always been the glue that holds everybody together, the rock for everyone in the family. “If you have an issue, you have a problem, you need advice, you call Judi. She is like a second mom to all her nieces and nephews.”
Dave has worked in the heating and air conditioning business for many years and Rummel said that he has always been so giving of his talents to help others out. “He was very active in the Springfield Youth Wrestling program and Judi was a teacher for the Missionettes program for girls over 15 years old.”
Rummel said so many have donated to the event already. Members of Team Judi are making tons of rice and many other dishes, Duma Meats is donating two 100-pound pigs, Hartville Marketplace is donating corn on the cob, Beiler's is donating vegetables and the list of generosity goes on.
The Luau/Pig Roast will be held at the Akron Springfield Assembly of God Church located at 1551 Canton Rd. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. with a silent auction, the luau buffet follows and then an oral auction after dinner.
Rummel said it is amazing how many businesses have already stepped up and donated items for the two auctions that will be held that night. From Indians tickets to a princess party pack which includes a visit from a princess, there is something for anyone to bid on. A ride on a fire truck with the fire chief would make a great surprise for a young future firefighter. Maybe karate lessons are something you have always wanted to do. There are gifts of chocolate and teeth whitening and even $400 from Choice Aire, just to name a few.
